Rwanda Gasharu Ireme
High Elevation and Intention
Gasharu Coffee is located along the Congo Nile mountain ridge in Rwanda, close to Nyungwe Forest National Park. The surrounding farms sit between 1700 and 2100 metres above sea level. The altitude, rich volcanic soils and steady climate create ideal conditions for slow cherry maturation and high clarity in the cup.
Many of the trees supplying Gasharu are around 20 years old. Farmers maintain strict pruning cycles and renew trees through stumping after about seven years to preserve vigour. Fertilisation combines nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and organic compost. The Ireme lot, meaning authentic, is produced as an anaerobic natural. The cherries ferment in sealed tanks without oxygen before drying. This controlled fermentation can increase fruit intensity and texture when carefully managed. In the cup expect ripe dark berries, tropical fruit, floral lift and a structured sweetness with depth.
Community and Biodiversity
Gasharu is family owned and closely embedded in the local coffee community. The station works directly with farmers and aims to shorten the distance between producer and consumer. Transparent collaboration and quality focus allow growers to access better markets and pricing.
The proximity to Nyungwe Forest is significant. This montane rainforest is one of Africa’s key biodiversity areas and home to a large share of the continent’s primate species. Farming in this environment requires responsibility. Gasharu operates a nursery to supply young coffee trees and promotes sustainable cultivation practices that protect soil and water resources. The Ireme lot reflects this approach, linking careful processing with long term environmental stewardship and stable relationships for farming families.
