The Coffee
Gicherori expresses a distinctly Kenyan character shaped by a rare combination of terroir, elevation and varietal development. The classic SL varieties were selected in the 1930s by Scott Labs specifically for the regions around Mount Kenya and still define the country’s aromatic identity today. Even though SL plants are cultivated elsewhere their clearest and most precise expression remains closely tied to Kenya’s cool mountain climate and its nutrient rich volcanic soils. In Gicherori, SL 28, SL 34, Ruiru 11 and Batian grow slowly and densely in these conditions, giving the coffee a structure that is seldom achieved elsewhere. The result is a profile that is unmistakably Kenyan and reflects its origin with striking clarity.
The Factory
The Gicherori Factory is more than a washing station. It is a meeting point for over 1200 smallholder farmers who cultivate their plots across the hills of Embu. Under the guidance of John Mbogo great care is taken to keep local water sources clean and to protect the old indigenous trees surrounding the farms. These trees provide shade, stabilise the soil and offer vital habitat for the region’s birdlife. Through regular training sessions field visits and a dedicated demonstration plot the cooperative supports farmers in keeping their trees healthy and bringing neglected parcels back to life. The result is quality that strengthens both the environment and the community.
